SEO Services from South Lakes SEO

SEO, short for search engine optimisation, is the work that helps your website appear when people search for what you offer. It covers the words on your pages, how your site is built and what other websites say about you.

Most people choose from the first few results they see, so being there matters. This page explains how SEO works, the different kinds and the ways we could work together. I am Tim Marston, an independent SEO consultant in Kendal, and I do every piece of the work myself.

Ask me a questionHow SEO works

Choosing your focus

Local SEO, National SEO or Both

The right focus depends on where your customers are and how they look for you. Here is how the three approaches differ.

  • Local SEO

Being found by people searching nearby, in the Google Maps results and for searches such as "plumber Kendal". It leans on your Google Business Profile, pages for the places you serve, and your reviews.

Suits: Shops, cafés, places to stay, trades and any business that serves customers in a set area.

  • National SEO

Ranking across the UK for searches where the customer does not mind where you are based. It relies more on in-depth content, a technically strong site and trust from other websites.

Suits: Online shops, software and service firms, and makers who sell and deliver UK-wide.

  • Local and National

A strong local base with a wider reach. Your home area gets its own profile and local pages, while your product or service pages compete across the country.

Suits: A Cumbrian manufacturer with trade customers around the UK, or a holiday business that also sells online.

How to combine them

Combining the two works best when every page has one clear job: local pages for the places you serve, national pages for what you sell. I usually start with the side that will bring in enquiries soonest, which is often local, then build out once the foundations are solid.

Google review

Tim at South Lakes SEO is an excellent, practical and results-driven SEO expert, who I consult with regularly. Every time I meet with him he gives me something to think about, and take action on – that always generates results. I would 100% recommend contracting or retaining South Lakes SEO if you're looking to get more leads and/or convert more sales online. Tim has run and sold his own successful ventures that were dependent on internet search traffic, so with South Lakes SEO you're dealing with someone who knows what it's like to be a business owner, and knows that it's real results that matter. Superb!

How SEO works

How SEO Works, in Four Steps

Every website is different, but good SEO always comes back to the same four areas. I look after all four myself.

  1. Keywords

Finding what your customers actually type into Google, rather than what you assume they type, and which of those searches are most likely to turn into enquiries.

  2. On-page

Making sure each page is relevant to the searches it targets and thoroughly optimised, from the title and headings to the words, images and links.

  3. On-site

Making sure the whole site is relevant and thoroughly optimised: quick to load, easy for Google to crawl, well structured and clearly linked together.

  4. Off-site

Generating signals on other websites, blogs and review pages, so Google and other websites learn to trust you.

Steady growth, built over time

SEO is not a switch you flip. When all four areas pull in the same direction, your visibility tends to build month by month, a bit like the line on this chart.

AI search

Ranking in AI Search

More people now ask AI for recommendations, and some AI tools go further and search, compare and book for them. These tools still need trustworthy information, and much of it comes from the same places Google looks.

  • AI chatbots

Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok answer questions directly and often name businesses in their replies. Clear, accurate information about you makes it easier for them to mention you.

  • Large language models

The LLMs behind those chatbots learn from content across the web. Consistent details about your business, on your own site and elsewhere, help them describe you correctly.

  • Agentic AI search

AI agents can now search, compare and take action for the person using them. Websites that are fast, well structured and clear about the facts are far easier for them to use.

In the modern world it is important to take account of these tools as well as Google, and I always do. It is part of my SEO work from the start, not an extra.

Ways to work with me

One-Off Projects or Monthly SEO

There are two ways to work with me. Both start with a free chat, and you get a clear price before any work begins.

Dip a toe in

One-off projects

Ideal for smaller businesses, or anyone who wants to see what SEO can do before committing to more.

  • SEO audits: a thorough check of your website, with clear priorities on what to fix first.
  • Full optimisations: I work through your site and put the fixes in place for you.
  • Google Business Profile optimisations: a complete, accurate profile that works harder in the map results.

For significant gains

Monthly SEO

For businesses taking SEO seriously and looking for significant gains. Each month I work across all four areas, keep an eye on progress and explain what I have done.

  • Ongoing work on keywords, on-page, on-site and off-site.
  • Plain-English updates from the person doing the work.
  • Rolling monthly, with no long tie-in or contracts.

FAQs

SEO Questions, Answered

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

Google Ads puts you at the top of the page for as long as you pay for each click. SEO earns your place in the normal results, so the visits keep coming without a charge per click. Many businesses use both, but SEO is the one that keeps paying back over the long term.

What does an SEO audit include?

I check how Google sees your website: the keywords you could be found for, how each page is set up, technical problems across the site, and how other websites link to and mention you. You get a clear list of what to fix, in order of importance, written in plain English.

What is Google Business Profile optimisation?

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows in Google Maps and the local results. Optimising it means making sure every detail is complete and accurate, choosing the right categories, adding useful photos and posts, and making it easy for happy customers to leave reviews.

Can you guarantee a number one ranking?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Nobody outside Google controls the results. What I can promise is careful, white hat work done by me, honest advice about what is realistic, and a focus on the searches most likely to bring you customers.

How will I know if my SEO is working?

I keep you updated in plain English, showing how your visibility on Google is changing and what I have worked on. Tools such as Google Search Console show the searches you appear for and the clicks you get, so you can see progress for yourself.

Does SEO still matter now people use AI chatbots?

Yes. AI tools still need trustworthy information to draw on, and much of it comes from websites that are well built, clearly written and trusted by other sites. Good SEO helps you in Google and gives AI search a better chance of finding and recommending you.

Can I do some of the SEO myself?

Yes. Plenty of business owners look after parts of their own SEO, such as their Google Business Profile or blog posts. I can show you what to focus on and handle the technical side, so your time goes where it makes the biggest difference. Ask me what would suit you.
