Website Hosting Kendal, Cumbria

Website hosting is the server your website lives on, and its quality shapes how fast, safe and reliable your site feels to every visitor. Good hosting is quiet: you only tend to notice it when it goes wrong.

I am Tim Marston. I host websites for businesses in Kendal, across Cumbria and further afield. I set your hosting up, keep an eye on it and deal with the technical side, so you can keep your attention on your customers.

Why it matters

Why Good Hosting Matters

Hosting sits underneath everything your website does. These are the areas a good set-up takes care of.

  • Speed

A quick, well-tuned server helps every page load promptly on phones and laptops. Visitors stay longer, and page speed is one of the things search engines take into account.

  • Security

Up-to-date server software, firewalls and malware scanning help keep attackers out, and an SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your site and the people using it.

  • Easy updates

The right set-up makes it simple to keep WordPress, themes and plugins current, with a fresh backup taken before changes go in, so an update never has to be a gamble.

  • Privacy

Your website files and visitor details should live on a server that is properly locked down, with access limited to the people who genuinely need it.

  • Client data and GDPR

If your website takes enquiries, bookings or orders, you are responsible for the personal data it collects. Hosting with sensible data protection in place makes your UK GDPR duties much easier to meet.

Quick, protected and ready for visitors

Behind a website that just works, there is a server doing its job well: answering every visitor promptly and keeping the wrong people out.

Know the pitfalls

Hosting Is Easy to Get Wrong

Plenty of hosting is perfectly decent. It is also an area where it is easy to pay more than you expected, or end up with a set-up that quietly holds your website back. These are the common traps to look out for.

  • Cheap deals that renew high

A low introductory price can jump sharply at renewal, often once you are settled in and moving feels like a hassle.

  • Slow, crowded shared servers

Budget plans can pack a great many sites onto one machine, so a busy neighbour can drag your site down with it.

  • Patchy backups

Some plans back up rarely, store the copies on the same server or charge to restore them, which is little help on the day you really need one.

  • Add-ons sold separately

SSL, backups, security tools and email can each be bolted on as extras, so the real cost quietly creeps up.

None of this means low-cost hosting is always bad. It just pays to know what you are getting. I explain plainly what is included before you decide, so there are no surprises later.

High-traffic websites

Ready for Busy Days

If your website gets lots of visitors, or sees sudden spikes from a newsletter, a promotion or a peak season, the hosting behind it really matters. An underpowered set-up can slow to a crawl or fall over just when the most people are trying to reach you.

A good-quality set-up has the resources to stay quick under pressure and room to grow as your traffic does. If your site is busy, or you expect it to be, I will look at what it needs and recommend hosting to suit.

A solid set-up

What keeps a busy site steady

  • Caching, so popular pages are served straight away instead of being rebuilt for every visitor.
  • Enough headroom for traffic peaks, with scope to scale up as you grow.
  • Monitoring, so problems are spotted and dealt with early.

Domains and DNS

Domains, Sorted

Your domain is your address online, and the records behind it tell the internet where to send visitors and emails. I can register and look after your domain alongside your hosting, so the two always work together.

  • Registering new domains

Help choosing a name that suits your business, then registering it in your name so it is ready to use.

  • Renewals that never lapse

Renewal dates kept on top of, so your domain does not expire and take your website and email offline with it.

  • Managing DNS records

The settings that point your domain at your website, make your email arrive reliably and verify your domain with services such as Google.

  • Moving domains across

Transferring a domain from another provider carefully, with its records checked so your site and email keep working.

Whoever looks after it, your domain is yours. It is registered in your name, and you stay in control of it.

Hosting looked after by one person

When you host with me, you are not raising a ticket with a faceless help desk. I set up your hosting, I keep an eye on it, and if you need anything, you speak to me.

There is no lengthy contract to sign, and if you ever want to move on, I will help you take your website and domain with you.

FAQs

Website Hosting Questions

Can you move my existing website?

Yes. I handle the move for you: copying your website across, checking it works properly on the new server and then pointing your domain at it. You do not need to do anything technical.

Is there any downtime when my site moves?

Usually nothing your visitors would notice. Your current site stays live while I set up and test the new copy, and the switch only happens once everything checks out. We agree the timing together, so any brief blip falls at a quiet time.

Are backups included?

Yes. Backups run automatically, and copies are kept away from the live server. If something goes wrong, I can restore your site for you rather than leaving you to work it out.

Is an SSL certificate included?

Yes. Every site I host has an SSL certificate, so it loads over a secure https connection and shows the padlock in the browser. I set it up and make sure it keeps renewing.

What happens if my site gets busy?

A good set-up copes with normal peaks without any fuss. If your traffic is growing, or you have a launch, promotion or busy season coming up, let me know and I will make sure your hosting has the resources it needs.

Do I own my website?

Yes, all of it. Your website, its content and your domain belong to you, and your domain is registered in your name. If you ever decide to move elsewhere, I will help you take everything with you, with no awkward hoops to jump through.

Can you register and manage my domain?

Yes. I can register a new domain in your name, keep an eye on renewals so it never lapses and look after the DNS records that connect it to your website and email. If you already have a domain elsewhere, I can manage it where it is or help you move it across.

Is there a contract?

No. Hosting is rolling monthly, with no long tie-in or contracts. You stay because it works for you, not because you are locked in.

Can you host my email as well?

I can talk you through the options when we look at your hosting. Depending on what you need, email can sit alongside your website or with a dedicated email provider, and I can help you set it up either way.
